Memorial Day 2011

Today is the day that we pay tribute to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. It is a time of reflection and a time to honor our fallen military members.

I wanted to know a little more about this day of remembrance, so I found this history from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs: http://www1.va.gov/opa/speceven/memday/history.asp

I also found a reference on Wikipedia which indicates it was started by freed slaves in Charleston, South Carolina. While I didn’t verify this, I like the thought of it! So, while we are celebrating the unofficial start of summer, let us also take a moment to remember.
