Mother's Day Red or White Rose Tradition

I hope everyone had a great Mother's Day! For me Mother's Day is always bittersweet. My mom is no longer with us but I have so many great memories of her and I'm so blessed to be able to share them with my daughter.

For Mother's Day, at least in the south, it's traditional to wear a red rose to signify a living mother and a white rose to honor a mother who's deceased. I'm not sure how long this has been going on or even when and where this tradition first started. I do know that growing up and going to church on Mother's Day was always sad for me seeing so many white roses. So in honor of this tradition I created the layout below.

Tradition by Tena Ellison. Supplies - Cardstock: Bazzill Basic; Patterned Paper: Teresa Collins;
Punch: Martha Stewart; Alphas: American Crafts; Die Cut Leaves: Spellbinders; Ink: Colorbox; Brads: My Mind's Eye.

I would love to know if you practice this tradition or have any other traditions of your own that you celebrate on Mother's Day. If so please leave a comment and share them with us.

  1. Yes Tena, Our family practices that same tradition and we all wear white. I'm thankful to still wear my red rose. Your layout is lovely!

  2. A white rose has graced my lapel the past 2 years on Mother's Day. My Mamma transitioned on June 19th, 2010! Mamma was born in 1915. She was raised in east Texas, near College Station, and Juneteenth was one of her favorite holidays.

    I think it's fitting that Mamma was "free at last" from Alzheimer's and the cares of this world on June 19th.

  3. Your layout has such special meaning! That is beautiful. I've never heard of this tradition, but I can certainly see how it would make you sad to see lots of white roses. Great layout and thank you for sharing your tradition with me.

  4. It's always nice to scrap family traditions. I was born and raised in California, and we followed the same red and white rose Mother's Day tradition.
