DIY Wood Veneer

Hello All! Today I want to share a technique I have been using to make my own wood veneer.  My One Little Word for 2014 is “use” and I have been really working on ways to use the things I have before I head to the store to buy new.  This whole concept got me to thinking about ways to make custom veneers for my pages that matched the style/theme I was using without having to run to the scrapbook stores/big box stores searching for the perfect ones.

For this project you will need a few items.  Gather your favorite distress ink and black stamping ink, a distress tool, small stamps (those stamps tiny Studio G $1 stamps work perfect for this project), and wood veneer blanks.  I am using blanks made by Creatology.  I purchased these for $2.99 for 130 pieces from one of the big box stores.  You can also find other shapes as well which can be used on your pages.

To start, use your distress tool and distressing ink to brush a light layer over your wood veneer.  I like the veneer that are slightly aged, so I almost always do this step.  You do not have to distress if you like the lighter wood coloring on your veneer.

Using your clear stamp, black ink and stamping block, make an impression on the wood veneer where you want your image to appear.  Using a clear stamp and clear block makes this much easier.  If you are using a round stamp, you may find it easier to place the blank on top of the inked clear stamp then press down firmly. Voila, a decorated veneer to use on your page!

Here are several others that I completes as well.

Here is a finished valentine card that I made using 2 wood veneer that I made from Studio G Thinking of You clear stamp set.  Supplies for this card:  Patterned Paper-This and That 6 x 6 pad from Echo Park; Cardstock-Bazzill and Prism; Veneer blanks-Creatology; Stamp-Studio G Thinking of You; Inks-Distress Ink by Tim Holtz (vintage photo) and Memento (Tuxedo Black); Die Cuts –Silhouette A2 envelope and card base and 4 cut-out patterns heart; die cut machine-Silhouette Cameo.

I hope this project has helped you think of ways to use what you already have in your stash in a new way.  Happy Scrapping!
