All you have to do is ask

I've always known that scrapbookers are some of the most generous people around...at least the group of ladies I've been scrapping and retreating with since 2006. That's how this project started. I wanted to play with my newest set of Faber-Castell Gelatos and a few other items at our last Sistah retreat earlier this month. So I asked Tiare if I could have a sheet of the water color paper she had been raving about, she said "sure, of course you can." I loved how easy it was to use the Gelatos on the water color paper and I had the perfect quote I wanted to use from the Silhouette store.

I thought the background looked great but that's where the easy part stopped for me. I decided to use a template with some molding paste, the girl image came out great but looked a little bland and needed something else. First I outlined the image but wasn't happy with that so I used a Prismacolor black marker to highlight the writing inside the image then I inked the image with some vintage photo distress ink to add some color to the molding paste. I also added some masking and stamping quotes to break up the negative space in the background.

This is my first large piece of mixed media, the size is 9.25x12.25. I've done some smaller art journaling pages but felt a little intimidated by this large size. It was great practice for when I decide to tackle my first large canvas. I don't think I'll be asking for anything else anytime soon but have to say I'm happy with how this turned out.

Be careful what you ask for...you just might get it LOL. But don't be afraid to try something new or push yourself outside of your comfort zone.

Craft "To Do" List

What's on your Craft "To Do" List that you've been wanting to check off?  Oh just do it!  That's what I did when attempting to alter this wooden picture frame on National Scrapbooking Day.  I had a long list of items "To Do", but I'm really excited about this altered frame for my mother.   It's personal and ready for her favorite photo.  

These flowers were made by me using the EK Success flower punches.  When she saw my receipt one day from a stash of flowers I purchased, she challenged me to make my own.

The metal embellishments are over 10 years old and in my stash ready to use.  No more hoarding in 2014. Can you see the burlap in the background?  The pearls on the right side of the bird came from her stash.

The 1st piece of metal came from Mom, The baby feet represents her grandson, the crown represents my name, the cross represents her 'Faith'.  That's her word!  The heart represents the love she gives to all.  The swirly thing came from her stash from Christmas as well as the sheet of round circles underneath the baby feet.

The scripture is a canvas chipboard piece I picked up at Joann's recently and the four numbers represents home.

Happy Veterans Day!

Wow I can't believe how fast this year is going.  We have already fallen into November, gained an hour and I'm still trying to catch up. lol We're in the midst of the holiday season, but I wanted to first pay tribute to our Veterans. It's a Time for Remembrance!  To all U.S. military veterans who served  our country whether active or retired...We salute YOU!  I wanted to get my hands dirty and get involved in a project that would identify with the Awesome job our veterans do.  It's a canvas project.  I love my Red, White and Blue!

Friends

Friends…everybody needs them or so the song says and I have to agree its true. I spent the weekend at the home of one friend and in the company of others. I could have stayed with family as I was in my home town, but this weekend was all about friends. When you live out of town and visit home everyone wants to see you; but you only have so much time. So this weekend I only saw my son cause he has the new Grand Guy and the rest of my time was spent with my crafting buddies.

Friday night we went to Ms. Vicky’s and I taught a bit of mixed media. We sprayed and applied gesso and modeling paste and matte medium and paint and on on mixed media goes. Our surface was a piece of mixed media paper and the completed panel is all well, pretty and good. But what do you do with it now?

You make a card to thank the home that received you, that feed you and chauffeured you around town.

I made a Center Step card. It is easy to do.

• Your card base measures 5.5” by 11.
• You cut a slit 1 inch in on the long side from 1’’ to 6.5” repeat on the other side.
• On both long sides score at 1”, 2”and 6.5” up to the slit (do not cross over).
• Beginning at the slit score at 5.5” in the center and end at the other slit.
• Mountain fold at the 1”score; Valley fold at the 2” score. Pinch a mountain fold in the center at the 5.5” score line and the 6.5 inch fold should fold itself. Burnish all your folds with a bone folder and your base is ready.

I cut up the mixed media panel to fit the card base both inside and out;

and also made 2 tags (Spellbinders labels ten) and a front pocket with a window cut in it for my sentiment. I added some stitching and my card only needed some personal words.

Altered Art Caddy

What had happen was.....I went to Aldi's to pick up a few items for a salad.  I saw the empty seasoning box and ding ding....I saw an opportunity for a project!  Could it be an Altered Art Caddy? What will I put in it?  How can I alter it?  While waiting in line the answers came to me and I went back and got another one.  This is my project for this month. Since it's for my scraproom, I made it match my red/white/black decor.  Now let me  show you how I made it happen.

Wish I could fit all my altered products in this caddy.

This is the box that captured my eye.

Gesso was applied on the outside.

I went to my stash of red/black/white scraps.  Now you see why I can't throw those scraps away. lol

Inside painted red and scraps applied with Mod Podge on the outside. Black paper is added to the bottom.

White paint with chicken wire dabbled on the inside

Stickles applied to the crown.  Maybe red would have stood out more.  The stamp, die cut, and bling crown were all RAKs from my  scrappy friends. 

A strip of cardstock applied to the front with a piece of lace I found.  Mini roses were added to the side to give it color.

Back view...Did you noticed the altered binder clips?  Thought they would be good to hold notes or projects.

Oh the possibilities!  I haven't gotten this mixed media quite just right.  I think I'm afraid to get messy, but I'll try again on my next box using a variety of colors.  Thanks for stopping by!  Love to hear what you think about it.

Friendship Day Mixed Media Canvas

Like many of the days that we celebrate in America, Friendship Day was originally founded by Hallmark in 1919. Their plan was to have a special day set aside for people to celebrate their friendship by sending each other cards. It was a great plan, but it died out by 1940.

Well, Friendship Day is back in style! On April 27, 2011 the United Nations officially recognized 

July 30^th as International Friendship Day, but most people celebrate it on the first Sunday in August. 

As usual, I'm late, but I don’t think my friends will hold it against me (they know me too well). I hope that you will forgive me for being late, as well. (belated) HAPPY FRIENDSHIP DAY!

Although the designated Friendship Day was yesterday, it’s never too late to recognize and celebrate your friends. Make cards, treat boxes, handmade flowers, mixed media canvases, ATCs, or whatever makes you smile and send them to your friends. 

There’s nothing like getting something besides bills in the mail. Many call it “snail mail,” but I prefer to think of it as “smile mail.”
